Our contractor was hoping to be done today. I was skeptical but hoping he was right. Unfortunately, I was. But progress was made. Linoleum tile has begun, just needs to be finished. The wall patches are complete and dry. The whole bathroom has been repainted. I also spent time outside today painting the long boards that will be the new baseboards.
What has been kind of cool with this project is the paint we're using. I use Miller Paint. Miller Paint is a Pacific Northwest company that specializes in paints for this wet climate. Bathrooms can become extremely moldy only because they hold steam from baths and showers, and suddenly you have black moldy patches on your walls. I grew up in a very very dry climate and was amazed at mold when I moved here years ago.
I ask Miller Paint for a gloss paint for my bathroom. The guy offers me, for a couple of dollars more per gallon (I am buying one gallon and one quart), I can use a special anti microbial paint that is specifically used for Pacific Northwest bathrooms to cut down on molds. Nice! I'll take it.
As I am waiting for one coat to dry tonight, I read the can of paint. It is called "Acro Pure--environmentally responsible paint". Okay, I am intrigued. I read the back of the can, it reads:
"....started making ZERO VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint before it was cool to be green. As a matter of fact, we took our number one product line and pulled all of the solvent out of it (which are the major contributors of VOC) because we thought it was the right thing to do. Nobody asked us to do it, but we knew there would come a time when indoor air quality environmentally consciousness and sustainability would be important to our loyal customers....
......Available in four sheens, all with built in antimicrobial protection to guard against mold and mildew, there is a finish that is perfect for your project."
My bathroom will be green, and I didn't even mean to do that! Nice! I am quite excited. Plus, I am excited that when we paint the other rooms, I can use this as well.
Now--what else has impressed me with this paint in the two days it's been on our wall--it really doesn't let anything stick to it. I tried to tape off a border tonight to do some trim painting--the painters tape fell off. Now I am in a pickle. I will need to consult my contractor guy--I am anal about trim looking nice, and I can't paint trim free hand. I need my painter's tape!
With great gusto, I totally recommend this paint. If you ever visit, sneak into the bathroom and run your hand over the walls. They are smooth, not high gloss, and icky things will wipe right off of them, making keeping this room clean much easier.
So, this slide show will reveal the new linoleum. My girlfriend who wanted to keep the old, or use expensive marble came over and was very impressed. This is linoleum, yet very much looks like marble. I got those for free from a friend years ago who finished a kitchen with them. She didn't want the extras, so I took them. My contractor's exact words, "You just saved yourself $400." Nice! Plus, I think they are very nice looking.
You will also see the fixed wall and the beginning of the sink going in. Plus, my painting project on the driveway. Can you believe that it was sunny on the fifth of November in Oregon?? The plank by the base of the pedestal is to show the color of the trim. It's a very light butter yellow. It will match some of our other bathroom fixtures, soften the stark white, and also capture some yellow highlights in the linoleum. The new light fixture is in as well. Love the brighter, yet soft, lighting.
Where is Ty Pennington when you need him?
